General Surgery
General surgery, despite its name, is a surgical specialty that focuses on surgical treatment of abdominal organs, e.g. intestines including esophagus, stomach, colon, liver, gall bladder and bile ducts, and often the thyroid gland.
Surgery of abdomen, appendix and all other surgical procedures not performed by the various specialties are included in this faculty of surgery. Norvic's faculty of general surgery is fully equipped to perform all types of major and minor surgeries that fall under the faculty of general surgery.
Laparoscopic Surgery
What is Laparoscopy?
“Minimal access Surgery” that combines the use of laparoscopy, thoracoscopy and endoscopy is a marriage (bondage) between modern technology and surgical innovation, which has taken the world through a minimal surgical and psychological trauma than conventional open surgical procedures.
A literary meaning of “laparoscopy” is to look inside the abdominal cavity through a tube fixed with camera, which has its origin way back in 1806 - as a primitive form of laparoscope designed by Philip Bozzini of Vienna known as Lichleiter. Many advances have been made since then before the modern day laparoscope has evolved to its present shape.
Initially laparoscopy was only used for diagnostic purpose and for performing few small procedures. One such procedure which was done frequently was laparoscopic tubal ligation by the gynecologists. This is probably the reason why the word “Laparoscopy” inadvertently became a synonym for “tubal ligation”. The major break through was Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy (removal of gall bladder containing stone) in 1987 by Philipe Mouret a French surgeon after which laparoscopic surgery entered a new era and has thus been running like a wild fire. It is now a well established fact that Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy is a Gold Standard of treatment for gall stone disease all over the world.
With further advances in laparoscopic instruments, virtually all types of open surgical procedures are now being done by laparoscopic technique. Therefore, all over the world open procedures are slowly being replaced by laparoscopic surgical procedures in almost all field of medical fraternity that involves surgery.
Why Laparoscopy?
Advantages of laparoscopic surgery (which involves very small two to three incisions or wound of 0.5cm to 1cm) over open surgeries are very many which is a well established fact - just to mention a few are:
Less post operative pain
Early recovery after surgery
Minimal days of hospital stay
Earlier return to work
Cosmetically more acceptable scar – which may be virtually invisible
Laparoscopy in Nepal
Although there is no published report or data in Nepal as to who performed the first laparoscopic surgery, some of the early pioneers in this fields are Dr. Ram Prasad Shrestha and Prof. Mahesh Khakurel.
Many institutions, including premier teaching institutes and private hospitals have been providing this services to the general public in Nepal since then.
In Norvic International Hospital -the first Laparoscopic cholecystectomy was performed by a team of surgeons involving Dr. Shail Rupakheti and Dr. Mukund Raj Joshi on October 9th, 2007 on two patients who were succesfully discharged within two days. Since that day, Norvic Hospital has entered into the era of laparoscopic surgery and has joined the group of hospitals that are in the march to take laparoscopic surgery to its pinnacle.
Services available
Presently only basic laparoscopic surgeries are being done in norvic and these are:
- Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy for Gall Bladder Stone
- Diagnostic Laparoscopy
- Laparoscopic hernia surgery for Inguinal and Incisional Hernia
- Laparoscopic appendectomy for appendicitis
With further future advances in instruments and technique the group of laparoscopic surgeons including Prof. Mahesh Khakurel, Dr. Shail Rupakheti Dr. Pradeep Vaidya and Dr. Mukund Raj Joshi would add on to more and more advance procedure to give the best to the patients that is offered by “Minimally Invasive Surgery” in Norvic International Hospital in years to come.
